Perinatal Anxiety Support

Your perinatal anxiety is not a reflection of your worth, ability or value as a mother! Find out more about the symptoms and causes of anxiety here, and how to overcome it.

What is Perinatal Anxiety?

Perinatal anxiety is a disorder, and I use that term lightly as strong labels like that can often feel unescapable and that is not the case, can occur during pregnancy or the postnatal period, defined as the year after giving birth.

Perinatal anxiety is a largely under resourced and under-supported condition because more time, energy and focus within our maternity care system is given to depression.  Yet perinatal anxiety is just as prevalent, if not more so, as depression with much bigger long-term impacts on the woman and child.  Postnatally much more time and consideration is given to the health and wellbeing of the baby, and the way you feel as a mother can often feel more like a tick box exercise carried out by your health visitor, than an in-depth review.  And so many women gloss over how they are feeling or hide away from having difficult conversations if it feels like the support isn’t really there.

With perinatal anxiety comes excessive worrying, fears, negative or intrusive thoughts, fear of judgment, feelings of failure and worries about the health and wellbeing of you and your baby.

These fears and worries have a huge impact on your daily life, and how you think, feel and behave and there have been strong links found in studies done on the lifelong impact of anxiety on both mother and baby, if not treated promptly and effectively.

So much anxiety has been normalised and almost expected as part of your motherhood journey, and while a certain level of worry will always be present in life, the excessive nature of this level of worry is not something you should, or need to, live with and the good news is - overcoming it is easier than you think!
