Vaginismus Support

Vaginismus can be a distressing and significant condition that impacts your quality of life, family planning and sexual desire - it’s time to change that! Find out more here about the causes and resolution for vaginismus!

Vaginismus is a condition that causes discomfort and tightness within the vagina where the muscles involuntarily tighten making sexual intercourse or using tampons difficult and sometimes impossible.

If left untreated, as it often is, it can have a huge impact on the quality of the relationships a person has, and their life in general.  It can cause significant distress as it impacts the sexual and personal life of a woman and can hinder a woman’s decision to start or expand her family, and alter the decisions she makes about how to birth her baby and can contribute to feelings of birth trauma.

It is estimated that 1 in 100 people deal with vaginismus, but it is largely undiagnosed as women find it so hard to talk about it, and awareness around it is limited

But it is treatable with a combination of therapy and physical exercises to help relax and re-train the muscles of the vagina.

Vaginismus causes & symptoms:

Vaginismus can be caused by injury or infection, but more often than not it is the result of psychological factors such as fear, anxiety or past traumatic experiences such as abuse or traumatic birth experiences. These fears and traumas need to be resolved in order to release the physical tension they create and bring you out of self-protect mode.

The symptoms can include burning or stinging sensations during intercourse, pain or discomfort during sex or gynaecological exams, and trouble suing feminine hygiene products like tampons.

 Vaginismus Treatment and Support:

Treatment for vaginismus includes therapy to eradicate the fear and anxiety and exercises to help gently desensitize the muscles of the vagina.  This combination of support can help you feel more comfortable during sexual activity, with your family planning decisions and how you process birth experinces.

My emotional health programme, The Mother Nurture Method will help you to deal with the fear, phobia and anxiety side of this condition and by the end of the 8-10 session programme you will likely find that your symptoms have reduced or resolved.

My programme includes the best techniques from CBT, hypnotherapy, applied psychology and neuro linguistic programming to help you get to the root cause of your fears and phobias, break them down and overcome them.  From a psychological point of view, my programme will support you to unpick and overcome thoughts, feeling, habits and behaviours that have contributed to your vaginismus.

And the good news is, you don’t have to even talk about your condition if you don’t want to.  I know how many women struggle to talk about vaginismus, but the way I work is to take a deep dive into all of your anxieties and phobias so that we are sorting out many challenges and obstacles all at once.  So as long as you are taking in the tools and techniques and applying them into your life, then you will significant change!
